Wind load on buildings vs. cars

Beregning af vindlast

Wind load simulated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) has been talked about for decades.

CFD has already been used in the car industry and airplane design for a long period. However, building design are much more complicated especially for two reasons.

Buildings are normally not aerodynamics and the flow is not uniform. When the buildings are not aerodynamic turbulence will be developed.

Turbulence is the difficult part of CFD and the part that requires a lot of computer power. And the incoming wind profile will also be turbulent because of atmospheric conditions and because of the roughness of the surrounding conditions.

The computer power is now larger and more efficient codes for turbulence has been developed. Hence, we believe detailed CFD simulations of wind load on buildings will soon to be a reality.
